Black, grey and whites are neutral; browns and beiges are sometimes considered to be neutral as well. Neutral colors are intended to send no messages and make good backgrounds, serve to unify diverse color palettes. They are sometimes thought of as colors "off the color wheel".

  • The term originates from beige cloth, a woolen fabric left in its natural color. It has since come to be used for a range of light shades chosen for their neutral or cool appearance, and is often (mis)used of light brown shades.
